Earning

During your time at university, you may wish to find part-time employment to supplement your income and gain valuable work experience for your future. Worcester is a great place for work with many flexible local roles in hospitality, retail and other industries, or you could work for the University itself. You also have access to the wider Worcestershire area and easy access to Birmingham too for other work opportunities.

Our Careers service are here to help you with both part-time as well as graduate jobs. Many of our students use the online University jobs portal to find suitable roles as well as the more widely used job websites. Our Careers service also regularly contact the course team with roles that may be of particular interest to Business and Computing students which we signpost to our students.

Below is a selection of work opportunities supported by Worcester Business School that are available to you when studying with us:

  • Springboard Internships – this is a Worcester Business School initiative to help students gain subject specific work experience whilst studying. These are mainly local to Worcester and vary in length and payment, but they are all completed in-year alongside your studies. These are often paid but sometimes voluntary and are for a few hours a week for 3-6 months. The good news is that competition for these is less fierce as they are open to Worcester Business School students only!
  • Start your own business Many of our undergraduates are keen to start their own business or have existing ‘side hustles’ that they would like to expand. We run 2 events per year for students who are interested in being an entrepreneur. Support and guidance are available each year and you can even complete a placement year developing your own business too!
  • 12-month Placements – you could apply to complete a year in industry between your 2nd and 3rd years to develop employability skills and enhance your CV for the future. These placement roles are mostly paid – approx. £18,000 per year – minimum duration of 36 weeks but could be longer. We have a dedicated Placements Officer who can help you in your search and offer support and guidance. You can apply for these roles anywhere in the UK and abroad. Whether you apply for a 3- or 4-year degree – with or without placement year – you always have the flexibility to decide if a placement is right for you, closer to the time.
  • Summer Internships – these are becoming extremely popular now and you can also do these between your 2nd and 3rd years. The summer break between May and September affords an opportunity to complete internships usually from 6 weeks to 3 months. Again, most of these are paid and are a great way to develop your employability skills and enhance your CV for the future.
  • University Ambassadors – these are paid roles helping out with functions, events and open days at the University. They are flexible and can fit around your studies. It is great to be able to talk to prospective and current students and develop your communication skills while you earn!

Contributing

An important part of our Worcester Business School PRME accreditation includes contribution to society and local communities, within and beyond the School. This may be something that you would like to be involved in too. We know that this is an increasing area of importance to young people, so here are some of the activities you could be involved in:

  • Worcester Award – This award allows you to record extra activities you take part in during your time at the university. Taking part encourages you to reflect upon how these activities can help to improve your future employability. The Worcester Award has four levels: Bronze; Silver; Gold and Platinum. You can decide which level of the award you want to aim for.  It is great for your CV and for job interviews and allows you to showcase the range of activities and passions you have been involved in during your time at Worcester Business School.
  • Course Representative – each course has a nominated representative to work with teaching staff, course leaders and the wider Business School to ensure the student experience is of excellent quality. You would attend meetings during the year with other course representatives, the Business School and the Students Union to represent the views of students on your course. This is a great role for getting to know others, increase your understanding of university life and enhance your communication and public speaking skills.
  • School Representative – this is similar to the role of course representative but this time you represent the views and experiences of the whole Business School student community. This not only provides you with all the same personal benefits as the course representative but also enables you to be part of the wider University student voice.
